It was first marketed under the trade name Flomax in 1996. Tamsulosin relaxes prostate and bladder muscles and makes it easier to urinate. It usually takes up to four weeks for Tamsulosin to have effect.
Tamsulosin is used to relieve urinary problems caused by benign prostatic hyperplasia. Your doctor may also recommend you to use tamsulosin to treat kidney stones. Tamsulosin helps remove stones by the same mechanism of muscle relaxation.
Take Tamsulosin in accordance with your prescription or follow the instructions you will find in the Patient Information Leaflet. The recommended starting dose is 0.4mg taken once daily. This dose may be adjusted depending on your response to treatment, body weight and medical condition. If you fail to respond to treatment, the dose can be increased to 0.8mg taken once daily.
Tamsulosin: Proper use
Tamsulosin capsule should be swallowed whole; avoid crushing or chewing it.
Take Tamsulosin about 30 minutes after meal. Do not take Tamsulosin on an empty stomach, as this could cause low blood pressure.
Tamsulosin: Drug interaction
There are many medications that can interact with Tamsulosin and cause adverse effects. You should not take Tamsulosin with other alpha blockers, including alfuzosin, doxazosin, prazosin, silodosin, or terazosin. Do not take Tamsulosin with other medicines that can reduce blood pressure, such as anaesthetics, phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors, and medicines for high blood pressure. Tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and medicinal herbs.
Tamsulosin: Side effects
The most common adverse effects of Tamsulosin include:
Nausea and vomiting
Less common side effects include headache, dizziness, low blood pressure, abdominal pain, muscle pain, abnormal ejaculation, and rash. Rarely Tamsulosin can cause a prolonged and painful erection, which cannot be relieved by masturbating or having sex. Get medical help as soon as possible if you develop this side effect.
Seek medical help if you develop any symptoms of allergic reaction to the drug or other serious side effects.
Tamsulosin is not indicated for use in children and women.
Do not take Tamsulosin without consulting your doctor if you have allergic reaction to Tamsulosin or other ingredients of the drug.
Consult your doctor before using Tamsulosin if you have decreased liver or kidney function, heart disease, hypotension, urinary incontinence, uncontrolled diabetes, or other severe diseases.
Avoid driving a car or doing anything that requires alertness until you know how Tamsulosin affects you.
Avoid getting up too quickly from a lying position to prevent dizziness and lightheadedness.
Tell your surgeon that you are using Tamsulosin if you will have cataract surgery. Tamsulosin can cause intraoperative floppy iris syndrome during eye surgery.
Tell your doctor if you have or have had prostate cancer.
Avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase certain adverse effects of the drug, such as feeling dizzy and fainting.
